Should homeless encampments be banned or should unhoused people be allowed to live in them?
The number of unsheltered homeless people in the United States has risen dramatically in recent years. In response, many major cities have passed laws restricting where the homeless can camp, igniting a heated debate over how best to deal with this crisis.
Donald Whitehead, the Executive Director of the National Coalition for the Homeless, says he believes one solution to help homeless people is to provide them with permanent housing. “Volunteering is a great idea. Many times, people start to renew that connection with everyday life by having an interaction with a volunteer,” Whitehead says. “Another really important thing is to convince our elected officials that they have to really do something to change this issue from a political standpoint.”
